Competition Rules

EVENT NO. 1 CHAINSAWING
STOCK CLASS 1 (1-3.1)

  1. Contestant must make 3 complete cuts within the allotted 8 inch section of an 8x8 cant.

  2. Cuts must be in a down up down sequence.

  3. Each cut must be a full cut.

  4. Time starts on the signal from the judge.

  5. Time stops when the last block is severed.

  6. Saws will be started on the ground for a one-minute warm up period.

  7. Starting position will be kneeling on one knee with the saw on the ground.

  8. Each saw can be run only once, this includes bar and chain, and must be places in a holding area until the completion of the event.

  9. In case of a tie, saws will be run off only to the first five places.

  10. If saw fails to start in the one minute warm up period it will be disqualified.

  11. Contestants in this event must wear proper safety equipment protecting eyes, ears, and legs (chaps).

EVENT NO. 2 CHAINSAWING
STOCK CLASS II (3.2-4.0)

            Same rules as event No. 1

EVENT NO. 3 CHAINSAWING
STOCK CLASS III (4.1-5.9)

            Same rules as event No. 1

EVENT NO. 4 CHAINSAWING
CLASS IV (FREE FOR ALL)

            Same rules as event No. 1 (This event does not count for �overall winner�)

EVENT NO. 5 LOG ROLLING

  1. The log will measure 14� long and be no more than 14� in diameter on the smaller end. 

  2. Two men using peavies or cant hooks will roll a log a total distance of 80� (40� each way) between two pairs of stakes 12� apart.

  3. Hands or feet may not be used to move or position the log.

  4. The log must rest against both stakes with wood visible on both sides of the stakes.  The signal to return the log will be given by the judge by saying, �Go!�

  5. Timing will be completed when the log is returned 40� to rest against two stakes in the manner as described above.

  6. Placement will be determined by the fastest time.

EVENT NO. 6 HUMAN LOG SKIDDING

  1. The committee will supply the log and rope for this event

  2. Each team will use the same log and rope used by all contestants in this event.

  3. Each team will have 3 minutes to skid the log a certain distance, which will be controlled by the committee.

  4. After 3 minutes the teams turn will be ended.

  5. The team that skids the log a certain distance, and has the fastest time not exceeding the 3 minute time limit for the event, will be declared the winners of this event.

EVENT NO. 7 AXE THROWING

  1. A target is approximately 30� in diameter and the center of the target will be 60� from the ground.  The target has four scoring areas.  Scoring will be from the bullseye: 5-4-3-2; the axe must stick in the target to score.  Highest scoring area of the target with a portion of the axe stuck in it will count.

  2. Axe must weigh at least 2.5 lbs with a minimum overall handle length of 24�

  3. Contestants are allowed one practice throw. Unauthorized practice throw at the target will result in automatic disqualification.  The practice throw may be counted if the contestant wishes, but only two more throws will be allowed.

  4. The throw line will be 20ft from the target.  The three counting throws will be made from behind the line.

EVENT NO. 8 BUCKSAWING

  1. Standard bucksaws, un-weighted, not longer than 44� will be used in this competition.

  2. Contestants will cut 1 complete slice from an 8�x8� White Pine cant.

  3. All contestants are to start at the same time (starting signal will be given over the loudspeaker system).

  4. Time will start when the saw moves and will end when one complete slice is severed from the cant.

  5. In the case of an incomplete cut another cut may be made.

  6. Cuts are to be on or close to the marks put on the cant by the committee.

EVENT NO. 9 TWO MAN CROSS-CUT SAWING

  1. Contestants will cut 2 complete slices from a 8�x8� White Pine cant.

  2. All contestants are to start at the same time (starting signal will be given over the loudspeaker system).

  3. Time will start when the saw moves and will end when two complete slices are severed from the cant.

  4. In the case of an incomplete cut another cut may be made.

  5. Cuts are to be on or close to the marks put on the cant by the committee.

  6. Should a handle fall off during the contest it may be put back on and sawing continued, time watches will not stop however.

EVENT NO. 10 HORIZONTAL LOG CHOP

  1. The contestants must stand on top of the log while chopping or they will be disqualified.

  2. Contestants will chop through an 8�x8� White Pine cant.

  3. Time will start when the axe hits the wood, and it will stop when the block is completely cut in two.

  4. The axe must remain on the wood until the count of (one) in the countdown.

  5. Judges will determine if the block has been completely cut.  If the block is moved, kicked, or disturbed before inspection, the contestant will be disqualified.

  6. Placement will be determined by the fastest time.

EVENT NO. 11 TREE FELLING

  1. Contestants will draw numbers for their pole position.

  2. Order of trees to be felled will be up to the judges.

  3. Contestants will be timed from the drop of the flag until the tree hits the ground.

  4. Contestant coming closest to the stake wins.

  5. In case of a tie, the better time wins.

  6. Contestants at no time can touch the tree with their hands or push the tree with the axe, or any part of their body.

EVENT NO. 12 SPRINGBOARD CHOP

  1. Contestants must chop a 8�x8� White Pine cant in two separate pieces.

  2. Time will start on the signal �go� or when the axe hits the wood, which ever comes first.

  3. The axe must remain on the wood until the count of �one� in the countdown.

  4. Time will end when top of the block is severed. From the main block.  The block must not be pushed with hands or pushed or twisted with the axe.  The block must be cut.

  5. Approximately a 9ft tall support pole will be used to set the springboards.

  6. Two springboards must be set.

  7. Holes must be notched in such a manor so that no benefit can be gained from previous holes.  No test holes will be allowed.

  8. Boards must be balanced without any hanging device.

  9. Placement will be determined by the fastest time.

  10. A three-minute maximum time limit will be in effect.

LUMBERJACK OF THE YEAR

  1. Contestant must enter all events, except only one stock chain sawing event will be allowed for points.

  2. Contestant with the highest total points will be named lumberjack of the year at the end of the competition.

  3. Points will be assigned to each competitor based on how they rank in each event.  The points will be assigned as followed.  1st 5pts, 2nd 4pts, 3rd 3pts, 4th 2pts, 5th 1pt.

  4. Points will be used from the following events, log roll, two man crosscut, buck-sawing, human log skidding, log chopping, and stock chain sawing.

  5. Overall winner will receive a prize of $50

SKIDDING CONTEST

  1. Logs will be numbered and placed in same general location for each contestant.
  1. Time will start with contestant on seat of machine.
  1. Contestant on signal of the judges, will dismount machine, hook chokers on logs, return to machine, fasten seatbelt and proceed around obstacles as directed by judges.
  1. Time will start on drop of flag and will stop when last logs clear last gate.
  1. A five (5) second penalty will be added to the contestants time  for each obstacle knocked over.
  1.  5 entry fee.

Heavy Equipment Events
All Events:

Qualifications: Contestants Must:

  1.  be 18 years of age or older.
  2. be familiar with the operation of the heavy equipment being used( hydraulic knuckleboom loader, skidder, tractor-trailer). All factory representatives and manufacturer demonstrator personnel are excluded.
  3. be, in the opinion of the judges, of unimpaired faculties.
  4. each contestant must register/sign release form  ( 5 entry fee), each contestant may only register one time for each event.
  5.  wear hardhat and gloves.

Timing Procedures:

  • Time starts and ends with visible signal.
  • Times may be posted for public viewing upon each contestant's completion of the course.
  • Winners will be those contestants who have completed the specific competition in the fastest adjusted time.

Prizes:

  • 1st Place:   $50
  • 2nd Palce:  $40
  • 3rd Place:   $30
  • 4th Place:   $20
  • 5th Place:   $10

All prizes will be presented at the Heavy Equipment area immediately after closing the event.  Winners do not have to be present to win - will be notified by mail.

TRUCK DRIVING CONTEST

  1. Contestant must have a valid New York State CDL license.
  2. Drop of flag starts time.
  3. Time stops when Maxi-Brake is put on.
  4. Only reverse low range can be used.
  5. Must back rig through obstacles to loading platform.
  6. Can use mirrors only with door shut.
  7. Five (5) seconds will be added to contestants� time for each obstacle hit.
  8. Contact with loading platform will result in disqualification.
  9. Stopping within these ranges contestants will have the following subtracted from time:
  • 6 inches from barrier or less��15 seconds

  • 6 inches to 12 inches �����10 seconds

  • 12 inches to 18 inches����.. 5 seconds

Stopping within these ranges contestants will have the following added to his time:

  • 18 inches to 24 inches����..5 seconds

  • 24 inches to 36 inches����.10 seconds

  • 36 inches to 48 inches����.15 seconds

  • Over 48 inches��.................�.Disqualification.

  1. In case of a tie, run off will be held.
  2. Truck will be returned to the starting gate by contest official.
